I attached 215 used pencils of varied sizes and colors by thread to a hop-hornbeam tree that in my parkway in Wheaton Illinois.  A yard sign is placed on one side of the tree describing the process of making pencils-the number of trees used annually, the number of pencils made, and environmental costs.  On the opposite side of the installation a yard signed is placed containing a poem meant to inspire passersby to ponder these pencils moving in the breeze-their origin their meaning for them.

Focusing on Scale, Volume and Mass, the pencils are naturally in scale with the ‘hops’ that  grow on this hornbeam tree.
